Game Design Course Malaysia 2026: What You'll Learn & Where to Study

By Paul·

In Malaysia, game design is rarely a standalone diploma. It splits into two tracks: game art (3D modelling, animation, character and environment design) via a creative multimedia diploma, and game programming (game logic, engines) via a software engineering diploma. Nova Academy offers both — 18 months, entry from 16 with no SPM.

Game Design Course Malaysia 2026: What You'll Learn & Where to Study

Malaysia's game industry keeps growing — local studios, outsourcing houses, and teams doing art and QA for global titles. Plenty of students want in, but search “game design course malaysia” and you'll notice something odd: almost no college offers a “game design diploma”.

That's not because you can't study it. It's because “game design” isn't one skill — it's two very different skill sets. Understanding that split tells you which course to actually enrol in.

What Does Game Design Actually Involve?

Every game is built by two groups of people:

  • Game art: character design, environments and props, 3D modelling, animation, game UI — what the game looks like.
  • Game programming: game logic, physics, multiplayer, performance — how the game works.

The “game designer” role (gameplay and level design) is usually reached after a few years in one of those two tracks — very few people start there straight out of school.

Why Are Standalone Game Design Diplomas So Rare in Malaysia?

Because studios hire for specific skills: 3D modellers, animators, game programmers — not “game design graduates”. So Malaysian colleges teach game art inside a creative multimedia diploma and game programming inside a software engineering diploma.

In other words: if searching “game design course malaysia” isn't turning up the right course, search for creative multimedia or software engineering instead — that's the industry's real front door.

3 Ways to Study Game Design in Malaysia (With Costs)

Short courses (weeks to months, ~RM500–RM5,000)

Single-tool crash courses — Unity basics, Blender modelling. Good for testing your interest, but rarely enough portfolio depth for a full-time role.

Diploma (from 18 months)

The full skill chain: design foundations, 3D modelling, animation, portfolio and internship. For students who've decided to make this a career — you can start at 16, right after secondary school, without waiting for SPM results.

Degree (3–4 years)

More theory, more time, more cost. A common path is diploma first, work, then top up to a degree later if needed.

Art Track or Programming Track?

  • You like drawing and have an eye for visuals → game art (creative multimedia).
  • You like logic and want to know how games work underneath → game programming (software engineering).

It's not an extreme either/or — artists benefit from understanding engines, programmers from visual language. But your major sets the focus of your first 18 months.

How to Start at Nova Academy

  • 18 months (15 study + 3 internship), 100% coursework and project assessment, and a real portfolio at graduation.
  • Entry from age 16, no SPM required — just a consultation.
  • Diplomas issued by UITM Poland (EQF Level 5). Fees payable over 3 semesters, or via bank education loans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study game design with no art background?

Yes. Game art relies more on software skills (3D modelling, texturing, animation) than raw drawing talent, and most design students start with no art background. The programming track needs no drawing at all.

What do game-related roles pay in Malaysia?

Junior game artists and multimedia designers earn around RM2,500–3,500; game programmers generally start higher. With seniority both tracks pass RM5,000. See our designer salary guide for full data.

Do I need to draw well to study game design?

Not necessarily. Game art values visual sense, but the daily work is 3D modelling and animation software; game programming involves no drawing at all.

Are there actual game industry jobs in Malaysia?

Yes — KL has local studios and international outsourcing teams. Creative multimedia skills also cross industries: advertising, film and e-commerce all hire 3D and animation talent.
