From Melaka to KL for an IT Diploma in Malaysia: Real Student Stories + 2026 Cost, Transport & Housing Guide (MRANTI Campus) — Nova Academy

“My daughter grew up around Jonker Street and has never lived on her own. If we send her to KL for an IT diploma (IT diploma Malaysia), will she cope? And how much will it cost a month?”
This was the first question a father, Mr Tan, asked me last month when Nova Academy held an admissions info session in Melaka. He was not the first to ask it, and he will not be the last.
For Melaka students, coming to KL (the MRANTI campus) for an IT diploma (IT diploma Malaysia) is doable, safe, and reasonable value — provided you first work out three things: (1) the real monthly cost of living out of state, (2) whether a better-value option exists locally in Melaka, and (3) whether coming home on weekends is actually feasible. This guide uses the real ledger of a Melaka alumnus who graduated from Nova Academy, plus an honest comparison with MMU Melaka and other Malaysian technical and vocational colleges, to help you and your parents make the right call — including the situations where we would tell you to stay in Melaka.
TL;DR: Nova Academy is an IT-focused technical college at MRANTI (Bukit Jalil), Kuala Lumpur, and welcomes students from Melaka into its IT diplomas (Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, AI, Creative Multimedia, Technopreneurship). The bus from Melaka to the MRANTI campus is RM10–15 one way and takes 2–2.5 hours; two years of living costs run about RM15K–20K more than staying home for MMU Melaka, and graduates typically earn that back within 4–6 months.
The typical Melaka pathway (what our admissions team has seen over the years)
Every year Nova enrols students from Melaka who walk this road. What follows is the typical journey our admissions team has observed — not one person's story, but the shared trajectory of many Melaka alumni:
- After SPM, they first considered MMU Melaka — cheaper tuition, and they could live at home.
- Nova's UITM Poland international diploma and IT-focused curriculum won them over, and they chose the MRANTI campus.
- The first semester is the hardest — living independently, doing their own laundry, sorting out their own meals.
- From Ayer Keroh to Nova's MRANTI campus, the bus costs about RM30 return; going home every 2 months is the common rhythm.
- After graduating, most work in KL / Cyberjaya (Cybersecurity and Software Engineering starting at RM3,500–5,500).
- The extra two-year outlay (accommodation + meals + transport) is usually earned back within 4–6 months of graduating.
When Melaka alumni are willing to share their real stories under their own names, we will add them here (with written consent).
What are the local IT study options in Melaka? (An honest comparison)
Let's be upfront: not every Melaka student should come to KL. Look at the local options first:
Multimedia University (MMU) Melaka campus
- Nationally accredited degree and diploma programmes
- Tuition: about RM30K–45K for the full diploma; RM60K+ for a bachelor's
- Commuting from home is workable (Ayer Keroh campus)
- Best for: students who want to live at home, hold an SPM qualification, and prefer a traditional university experience
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)
- Public university with very low tuition
- Requires strong SPM / STPM / Matriculation results; highly competitive
- Best for: students with good SPM results who want a public university and can wait for the application outcome
Politeknik Merlimau / local vocational colleges
- Government-accredited (JPK)
- Tuition RM3K–15K
- Best for: students with average SPM results who want a government vocational diploma on a very tight budget
🚫 Myth: a KL IT college is automatically better than staying local in Melaka
✅ Reality: MMU Melaka is a perfectly credible choice. What you should really compare is programme focus — Nova concentrates on 5 IT tracks (Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, AI, Creative Multimedia, Technopreneurship), and graduates earn dual credentials: a UITM Poland international diploma plus the IKMa government professional diploma; MMU is a comprehensive university where IT is one faculty among many. The choice comes down to whether you want the full university experience or focused IT vocational training.

The figures below assume two years of study and living away, for a student from central Melaka (around Ayer Keroh / Bukit Beruang):
MMU Melaka (living at home): estimated 2-year outlay
- Tuition: RM30K–45K
- Accommodation: RM0 (living at home)
- Meals: covered by the family
- Monthly transport to campus: petrol RM150–200
- 2-year total: RM34K–49K
- Added value: living with family, cheaper meals, peace of mind for parents
Nova KL / MRANTI (living away): estimated 2-year outlay
- Tuition: RM22K–35K
- Accommodation: RM600 / month × 24 = RM14,400
- Meals: RM800 / month × 24 = RM19,200
- Monthly transport to campus: public transport / walking RM50
- Melaka ↔ KL trips home: RM30 return bus × 12 trips = RM360
- 2-year total: RM56K–69K
- Added value: independence, the UITM Poland international diploma, KL's internship circle, jobs on your doorstep
Key observation: Nova's 2-year total runs about RM15K–20K above MMU Melaka. But Nova graduates typically start in KL at RM3,500–5,500/month (higher for Cybersecurity), so the difference is earned back within 4–6 months.

Getting from Melaka to KL: bus, car, train
Express bus (what most Melaka students choose)
- Route: Melaka Sentral → TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan)
- Travel time: 2–2.5 hours
- One-way fare: RM10–15 (Transnasional, KKKL, Delima, Konsortium, and others)
- TBS → Nova's MRANTI campus: take the LRT Sri Petaling Line to Bukit Jalil / Sri Petaling, then a Grab for about RM7–10 (or walk 10–15 minutes)
- Total return cost: about RM25–35 per trip
Driving / carpooling
- Distance: about 150 km (PLUS North-South Expressway)
- Petrol: about RM40 one way
- Tolls: about RM30 one way
- Total return cost: about RM140 + parking
- Works well when several students share a car and split the cost
Train (no direct line — not recommended)
- Melaka has no direct ETS station
- Nearest ETS station: Tampin (about 40 minutes from central Melaka)
- Only worth it for students living in Alor Gajah / near Tampin
Is going home on weekends realistic?
Answer: once every 2–4 weeks is the realistic rhythm for most Melaka students. Finish class Friday afternoon, catch the 6pm bus, and be home before 9pm; head back to KL on Sunday afternoon. Going home once or twice a month is genuinely no problem.
Accommodation: where Melaka students live near MRANTI
Option A — Nova's designated / partner hostel (walking distance to MRANTI)
- Monthly rent: about RM500 / month (Nova's partner student hostel, shared by 2–4 students; the actual amount depends on hostel location, room type, and semester)
- A 5–15 minute walk to the MRANTI campus
- Resident warden, with utilities and Wi-Fi all included
- Book 2 months before term starts
Option B — student apartments in Bukit Jalil / Sri Petaling / OUG
- Monthly rent: RM600–1,200
- Areas: Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling, Pantai Dalam, OUG
- Platforms: iBilik, SpeedHome, MudahHostel
- A good long-term fit for students from mid-distance states
Option C — sharing with classmates / fellow Melaka students
- Monthly rent: RM400–700 (a 2–3 bedroom apartment split between housemates)
- How to find it: Melaka hometown WhatsApp groups / introductions from seniors
👨👩👧 A word for Melaka parents
We welcome a group of Melaka students every year. The three things parents worry about most:
1. “Is my child safe living alone in KL?” — The area around campus is a commercial and student district with dense Grab coverage. Most Melaka parents stay 2–3 days on their first trip up to help their child settle in.
2. “What if she can't get used to KL food?” — Around town (Jalan Alor, Pudu) you'll find restaurants serving Melaka flavours — Nyonya cooking, Hokkien mee, chicken rice balls.
3. “What if she struggles to keep up with her studies?” — Nova's admissions team pairs each newcomer with a Melaka senior as a Buddy, one-on-one, for the first three months.
When is staying in Melaka actually the smarter choice?
Honestly, in the following situations we would advise you to stay in Melaka:
- Your family needs you at home (looking after younger siblings / the family business)
- Your SPM results are excellent (5A+) and you can get into UTeM
- You are not yet sure you even like IT — a local Foundation year is a lower-risk way to test the water
- You already have an IT internship / job in Melaka and can study while working
Conversely, coming to Nova pays off more when:
- You want to work in KL / Cyberjaya straight after graduating (where most IT jobs are concentrated)
- You need an international credential to open doors to overseas study or multinational employers (the UITM Poland diploma sits at EQF Level 5)
- You want to build a KL professional network / internship opportunities
- You want to leave home and grow through independence
Nova's Melaka alumni network
Every intake at Nova includes current students and alumni from Melaka. In the week before each semester starts, the Melaka hometown WhatsApp group organises TBS pick-ups, shows newcomers around the MRANTI campus and KL's public transport, and does a first supermarket run together. It is not an official programme — it is a tradition the seniors keep alive themselves.

Yes. Nova admits students aged 16 and above into its IT diploma programmes with no SPM results required. See: an IT diploma without SPM
Q2: Are there scholarships or financial aid for Melaka students?

4–6 weeks on average. In the first semester Nova runs a Buddy system (a senior from your hometown looks after newcomers), and by the third month most students have found their feet.

No. Nova graduates are spread across KL, Cyberjaya, Penang, and Singapore — some have even returned to Melaka as remote software engineers. But KL has the densest IT job market, and the MRANTI park itself is a doorway into employment.
