Seremban Students Studying IT in KL: Daily KTM Commute vs Living Near MRANTI — 2026 Real Cost Comparison (Nova Academy)

"My dad has taken the KTM from Seremban to KL Sentral for work every day for 15 years, and he says 'it's doable'. But he's a 9-to-5 accountant with fixed hours. I'm studying IT — working on projects past midnight is normal for us. Can I really handle 3 hours of commuting every day?"

Seremban is the only non-suburban city in Malaysia close enough to KL for a genuine daily commute — KTM Komuter from Seremban to KL Sentral takes just 45–60 minutes, then another 25 minutes on the LRT to MRANTI (Bukit Jalil). If you take an IT diploma at Nova Academy, you face a real either-or: commute daily (save on rent and stay with family, but lose 3 hours of study time a day) or live near MRANTI (save time and grow independent, but add RM12K+ in housing costs).

TL;DR: Seremban → MRANTI commute: KTM Komuter (45–60 min, RM10 / RM100 monthly pass) + LRT Sri Petaling (25 min, RM3) + Grab or a walk (10–15 min). About 1.5 h and RM13 each way. Commuting daily for 2 years saves roughly RM30K in housing and meals, but eats ~750+ hours of study and rest time. During project-heavy stretches, IT students are better off living near MRANTI.

Nova Academy's MRANTI Campus: Why Location Matters

Nova Academy's campus sits inside MRANTI (Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation), formerly Technology Park Malaysia (TPM), governed by Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and located in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. The park is home to 100+ tech companies, startups and research units, including Grab, Razer and Petronas Digital. What that means for students:

  • Internships within walking distance — companies inside the MRANTI park are the first port of call for Nova student interns
  • The densest IT job market in Malaysia — Cyberjaya, TPM and Bangsar South are all within a 30-minute commute
  • Bukit Jalil LRT / Sri Petaling LRT — easy connections from TBS, KL Sentral and KLIA
  • A learning environment backed by MOSTI at government level

Seremban → MRANTI Campus: Every Transport Option

KTM Komuter (the main commuting option)

  • Seremban → KL Sentral: 45–60 min
  • One way: RM10
  • Monthly Pass: ~RM100 (unlimited rides)
  • Frequent service (every 15–30 min at peak hours)

ETS Platinum (faster but pricier)

  • Seremban → KL Sentral: 30 min
  • One way: RM16
  • Best for: when you're racing the clock

Driving (PLUS highway)

  • Distance: ~70 km
  • One way: RM10 tolls + RM15 fuel = RM25
  • Unpredictable jams (KL morning peak 1.5 h+)

Long-distance bus

  • Seremban Terminal → TBS: 1 h, RM8
  • Infrequent departures — not recommended for commuting

The Daily Commute: Real Costs and the Time Ledger

  • KTM Komuter monthly pass: RM100
  • LRT monthly pass (40 trips): RM120
  • Grab (last mile): RM0–100
  • Monthly commuting cost: RM220–320
  • 2-year commuting cost: RM5,280–7,680
  • Daily commuting time: 3 h (round trip)
  • 2-year commuting time: ~1,500 hours

Key observation: commuting for 2 years saves about RM30K in housing and meals. But it consumes 1,500+ hours (roughly 62 full days). For an IT student, that is real opportunity cost across projects, internships and networking.

Living Near MRANTI: The Real Costs

  • Housing, 24 × RM500 (Nova partner hostel): RM12,000
  • Meals, 24 × RM800: RM19,200
  • Seremban ↔ KL trips home every 2 weeks × 24 × RM20: RM480
  • 2-year total: around RM31,680

The difference: living near MRANTI costs about RM26K more than commuting daily, but it buys back 1,500 hours, plus independence and the ease of teaming up on projects near campus.

A Typical Path for a Seremban Student

  • Tries the daily commute in semester one — to save money.
  • Works on projects until 10pm most weeks, catches the last KTM, gets home at 1am.
  • Loses 4–6 kg and grades slip — health and studies both take the hit.
  • Moves into a shared Sri Petaling apartment at about RM500/month in semester two — and recovers almost immediately.
  • Graduates into a junior dev role at a Bangsar South fintech / SaaS company, starting at MYR 4,800.

When Seremban alumni are willing to share their stories by name, we will add them here.

When Does Commuting Daily Actually Work?

  • You have excellent time management and a steady workload
  • Your family is fine with you getting home after 10pm
  • You skip most group projects / society activities
  • Your course is theory-heavy (commuting is nearly impossible during intensive IT project periods)

When Is Living Near MRANTI Worth More?

  • You're doing project-intensive courses like software engineering / cybersecurity / AI
  • You want to join MRANTI tech meetups / hackathons (usually in the evening)
  • You want to grow independent (moving out for the first time)
  • You plan to take part-time work or an internship (jobs within walking distance of MRANTI)

The Middle Path: Live Nearby for Sem 1, Then Decide

Many Seremban students go this route:

  • Year 1 Sem 1: live near MRANTI (settle in and build your circle)
  • Year 1 Sem 2: play it by ear — keep renting if projects are heavy; switch to commuting if the load is lighter
  • Year 2: most students have found a stable rhythm by now, and most stay near campus

Housing: Where Seremban Students Live Near MRANTI

Option A — Nova's partner hostel (walking distance to MRANTI)

  • Monthly rent: about RM500 / month (shared, 2–4 pax; the actual amount depends on hostel location, room type and semester)
  • 5–15 minutes' walk to the MRANTI campus
  • Live-in warden; utilities and internet all included
  • Book 2 months before the semester starts

Option B — Student apartments in Bukit Jalil / Sri Petaling / OUG

  • Monthly rent: RM600–1,200
  • Areas: Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling, Pantai Dalam, OUG
  • Platforms: iBilik, SpeedHome, MudahHostel

Option C — Sharing with classmates / hometown friends

  • Monthly rent: RM400–700 (a 2–3 bedroom apartment, split)
  • Where to look: Seremban hometown WhatsApp groups / referrals from seniors

A Word for Seremban Parents

1. "How much does the RM100 KTM pass really save?" — About RM26K over 2 years, but it costs 1,500 hours. Do the maths on whether that trade is worth it.
2. "Can he take the KTM home alone at night?" — The last train is around 10:30pm, and IT project nights often run past it. Safety is fine; the timing usually isn't.
3. "We have a room at home — why pay rent?" — It isn't about the room. It's about time and the ecosystem. An IT student's collaboration and networking happen near campus.

FAQ

Q1: My SPM results were poor — can I still join Nova?

Yes. Read the guide for poor SPM results

Q2: Scholarships for Seremban students?

Book a one-on-one financing consultation — the options are bank education loans and Nova's 3-semester instalment plan.

Q3: Is the KTM Komuter safe for late-night trips home?

Generally safe, but options thin out after the last train. Grab works, though the cost adds up.

Q4: Can I move back to Seremban and work remotely after Nova?

Yes. Seremban is close to KL, and some Nova alumni live at home and work remotely.

Q5: I want to save money AND live at home — is there a solution?

The middle path: live near campus in Year 1 to build your rhythm, then reassess commuting in Year 2.
