Design Diploma in Malaysia: Graphic Design, Multimedia, Animation or UI/UX? How to Choose (2026)
Choose a design diploma by direction first: graphic design, creative multimedia (the broadest), animation, or UI/UX. Malaysia has four types of option: public programmes, MQA-registered private design colleges, overseas-issued vocational diplomas (e.g. Nova: from 16, 18 months) and short software courses.

Love drawing, editing videos or making posters, and thinking about a design diploma? Graphic design, multimedia, animation, UI/UX: the names overlap, but what you learn and where it leads differ. This guide sorts them out, then helps you choose.
Short answer: First decide what you most want to make (print and branding, video and motion, animation, or app and web interfaces). Then check SPM, budget and time. With the direction clear, choosing a college is much easier.
Five common design diploma directions
- Graphic design: logos, posters, packaging, social media visuals.
- Creative multimedia: the broadest, combining graphics, video, motion and interactive media. Good if you haven't chosen a specialism yet.
- Motion graphics and video: short videos, ads, title animation, editing and post-production.
- Animation: 2D or 3D character and scene animation; it takes longer to master.
- UI/UX design: app and website interfaces and user experience, often at tech companies.
Four types of design diploma in Malaysia
1. Public polytechnics and vocational colleges
- Entry: SPM with the required subjects. Low fees; limited places and the directions offered vary.
2. MQA-registered private art and design colleges and universities
- Entry: SPM; some ask for a portfolio. Medium to high fees, usually about 2–2.5 years.
3. Vocational diplomas issued by overseas universities (e.g. Nova Academy)
- Entry: Nova accepts students from 16, no SPM, no portfolio or interview. Fees can be covered with bank loans and instalments.
- Duration: Nova's Creative Multimedia diploma takes 18 months (15 months of study plus a 3-month internship stage). The diploma is issued by UITM Poland at EQF Level 5.
4. Short software courses
- Note: weeks to months on one tool; a completion certificate, not a diploma.
Six questions to ask before you choose
- Which directions does the course cover: one specialism, or graphics, video, motion and UI/UX together?
- Which industry-standard design and editing software will you use?
- How many finished portfolio pieces will you graduate with?
- Is there an internship, and how does the college help with interviews?
- Who issues the diploma, and which degrees can you continue to?
- What's the total cost? Instalments or bank loans?
Nova Academy's Creative Multimedia diploma
Nova's Creative Multimedia diploma takes 18 months: 15 months of studio-style classes, from design basics and digital illustration to graphic design, motion graphics, video production, web and UI/UX design and interactive media, followed by a 3-month internship stage where Nova arranges interviews with industry partners and coaches you to prepare.
Every unit is graded on real design briefs and finished work, so you graduate with a portfolio. The diploma is issued by UITM Poland (EQF Level 5), with a 12-month bachelor's top-up afterwards.
