SPM is done. What next? Form 6, matriculation, foundation, diploma, vocational... there are many options, and each differs in time, cost and where it leads. This guide compares them in one list.
Short answer: Decide your goal first: a public university, a private degree, working as soon as possible, or studying abroad. Once the goal is clear, the route is half chosen.
Seven routes after SPM
1. Form 6 (STPM)
- Duration: about 1.5 years.
- Cost: very low, at a national secondary school.
- Next: apply to local public universities with STPM results; some overseas universities accept it too.
2. Matriculation (Matrikulasi)
- Duration: about 1–2 years.
- Cost: low, government-run.
- Note: limited places and very competitive.
3. Private university foundation
- Duration: about 1 year, then about 3 years for the degree.
- Cost: medium to high.
4. A-Level or other international pre-university
- Duration: about 1.5–2 years.
- Cost: higher. Suits students planning to study abroad.
5. Diploma (polytechnic or MQA-registered private college)
- Duration: usually about 2–3 years.
- Entry: usually at least 3 credits at SPM, often including maths for IT; check each college.
- Next: work, or continue to a degree, sometimes with credit transfer.
6. Vocational education (TVET)
- Includes: Kolej Vokasional, government skills institutes such as ILP (SKM certificates), and private vocational college diplomas.
- Example: Nova Academy's IT and design diplomas: 18 months, from age 16, no SPM threshold, and open to students with SPM too.
7. Work first or take a gap year
- Suits: students who aren't sure yet. Six months to a year of work can clarify your interests.
Match the route to your goal
- Public university on a low budget: Form 6 or matriculation.
- Private degree: foundation, or a diploma then a degree.
- Work soon, hands-on learner: diploma or vocational route.
- Study abroad: A-Level or another international pre-university.
Is Nova Academy right for you?
If you want job-ready IT or design skills quickly, Nova's 18-month diploma (15 months of study plus a 3-month internship stage) is one option. The diploma is issued by UITM Poland (EQF Level 5), some programmes offer a dual diploma with IKMa, and a 12-month bachelor's top-up follows.
If your goal is a public university or a government job, Form 6, matriculation or an MQA-registered programme will suit you better.
Frequently Asked Questions
After SPM, is Form 6 or a diploma better?
It depends on your goal. Form 6 suits a public-university plan on a low budget; a diploma suits students who want to work sooner or prefer hands-on learning.
How many SPM credits do I need for a diploma?
Usually at least 3 credits, often including maths for IT; check each college. Age-based diplomas such as Nova Academy's have no SPM threshold.
Can I start studying before SPM results come out?
Most programmes need results to confirm your place. Age-based programmes such as Nova Academy's (from 16) let you start earlier.
What's the fastest route after SPM?
For a degree, a foundation year plus a 3-year degree is common. To start working soonest, an 18-month to 2-year diploma is faster.
