Failed SPM BM or No Credits? 3 Ways to Study IT in KL (2026)
You can still study IT with a failed SPM BM and no credits. The three main routes are SKM → DKM (about 3 years to a skills diploma), a certificate then an MQA diploma and degree (often 6+ years), or an age-based overseas-university diploma such as Nova Academy (from 16, SPM not required, about 30 months to a bachelor's).

A common situation after SPM results: you failed Bahasa Melayu, passed your other subjects without credits, and want to study IT. Many students think a diploma is now out of reach. It isn't; the route is just different.
Short answer: You can still study IT with a failed BM and no credits. Malaysia has three main routes: the government skills route (SKM → DKM), getting a qualifying certificate before an MQA-registered diploma, or an overseas-university vocational diploma that admits by age. They differ a lot in time, cost and where they lead.
Route 1: Government skills route (SKM → DKM)
- What it is: Malaysian Skills Certificates (SKM Levels 1–3) and the Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM Level 4), under the Department of Skills Development (JPK) system. Hands-on.
- Entry: most SKM courses ask for basic reading, writing and arithmetic, not necessarily SPM credits. Some government institutes have quotas or eligibility limits; check first.
- Time: SKM Level 3 usually takes about 1.5–2 years, then DKM Level 4 about 1.5 years.
- Note: SKM/DKM are skills qualifications. Moving on to an academic diploma or degree depends on whether the next college accepts your certificate.
Route 2: Qualify first, then an MQA-registered diploma
- How: retake selected SPM subjects for credits, or complete a related SKM Level 3 / MQF Level 3 certificate, then apply for an MQA-registered IT diploma.
- Entry: many MQA diplomas ask for at least 3 SPM credits (often including maths); some universities accept a related SKM Level 3 or MQF Level 3 certificate with a minimum CGPA.
- Time: certificate about 1–2 years, diploma about 2–2.5 years, degree about 3 years: often 6+ years to a degree, depending on credit transfer.
- Suits: students aiming for a local public university or a government job.
Route 3: An overseas-university vocational diploma that admits by age (e.g. Nova Academy)
- Entry: Nova Academy admits by age, from 16. SPM results aren't required, so a failed BM or no credits is fine, and there's no entrance test.
- Time: an 18-month diploma (15 months of study plus a 3-month internship stage), then a 12-month top-up bachelor's: about 30 months to a degree from enrolment.
- Certificate: the diploma and degree are issued by partner university UITM Poland (EQF Level 5 / 6), and the bachelor's can be completed fully in Malaysia at Nova's KL campus.
- Fees: payable over three semesters, and can be combined with a bank education loan.
- Suits: students who want to start IT now, like hands-on projects and plan to work in the private sector.
Why can a degree take 30 months? Is that too fast?
It's a fair question. A typical 3–4 year bachelor's starts after foundation or a diploma. Nova's route is an 18-month diploma (EQF Level 5) followed by a 12-month top-up (EQF Level 6), so the diploma itself forms the first part of the degree.
- Check the university: the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów (UITM Poland) is a registered Polish university, listed in the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education's register (POL-on).
- Check the level: EQF Level 5 is a short-cycle higher-education diploma; Level 6 is a bachelor's degree.
- Using it in Malaysia: for government jobs or public universities, you can apply to MQA for an equivalency assessment after graduating. Private employers generally look at skills and portfolio.

How to choose
- Public university or government job: route 2, and expect it to take longer.
- Tight budget, want a skill first: route 1.
- Want to start IT now, earn a degree sooner and work in the private sector: consider route 3.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study an IT diploma if I failed SPM BM?
Yes, through a different route: an SKM skills certificate, a qualifying certificate before an MQA diploma, or a diploma that admits by age, such as Nova Academy (from 16, SPM not required).
With no SPM credits, how fast can I get an IT degree?
Via a certificate, an MQA diploma and a degree, often 6+ years. Nova Academy's route is an 18-month diploma plus a 12-month top-up, about 30 months from enrolment.
What's the difference between SKM and a diploma?
SKM/DKM are skills qualifications under JPK; a diploma is an academic qualification. Using SKM to move on depends on whether the next college accepts it.
Can I complete Nova's degree in Malaysia?
Yes. Both the diploma and the bachelor's can be completed fully at Nova's KL campus; certificates are issued by UITM Poland.
