Software Engineering Diploma in Malaysia: Which Type of Programme Should You Choose? (2026)
Malaysia has four main types of software engineering diploma route: public polytechnics (SPM, low fees), MQA-registered private diplomas (SPM), overseas-issued vocational diplomas (e.g. Nova: from 16, no SPM, 18 months), and short coding courses (not a diploma). Choose by SPM, budget and career goal.

"Which software engineering diploma in Malaysia should I choose?" is one of the questions we hear most. Honestly, no single college suits everyone. A more useful question is: which type of programme fits your situation?
Short answer: Check four things: whether you have SPM, whether you're aiming for a government job, your budget and time, and whether you want to work straight away or continue to a degree. Those four points narrow it down to one or two types of programme.
Four types of software engineering / IT diploma in Malaysia
1. Public polytechnics (Politeknik)
- Entry: SPM with the required subjects.
- Fees: low, government-funded.
- Duration: usually about 2.5–3 years, including industrial training.
- Suits: students with SPM on a tight budget who can handle competitive applications.
2. MQA-registered diplomas at private universities and colleges
- Entry: SPM, usually with passes in subjects such as maths for IT.
- Fees: medium to high depending on the college.
- Duration: usually about 2–2.5 years, then a local degree, sometimes with credit transfer.
- Suits: students with SPM who plan a local degree or government job.
3. Vocational diplomas issued by overseas universities (e.g. Nova Academy)
- Entry: by age. Nova accepts students from 16, no SPM needed.
- Fees: bank education loans and college instalments.
- Duration: Nova takes 18 months (15 months of study plus a 3-month internship stage). The diploma is issued by UITM Poland at EQF Level 5.
- Suits: students without SPM or with weak results, who want to start early and like hands-on projects.
4. Short coding courses / bootcamps
- Entry: usually no academic requirement.
- Duration: about 3–6 months.
- Note: a completion certificate is not a diploma and doesn't lead to a degree. Good for people who already have a base and want one more skill.
Six questions to ask before you choose
- What does the course teach? Mainstream languages (Java, JavaScript, Python), web and mobile development, databases, software testing?
- Is there an internship? How long, and how does the college help with interviews?
- Who issues the diploma, and at what qualification level?
- Which degrees can you continue to afterwards, and how long does it take?
- What's the total cost? Instalments or bank loans?
- What language is it taught in?
Nova Academy's software engineering diploma
Nova's Diploma in IT (Software Engineering) takes 18 months: 15 months of study, starting with Java and JavaScript and moving on to web development, Android and iOS apps, MySQL databases and the full software development lifecycle, followed by a 3-month internship stage where Nova arranges interviews with industry partners and coaches you to prepare.
Assessment is project-based, so you graduate with a portfolio to show employers. Teaching is mainly in English with bilingual support. The diploma is issued by UITM Poland (EQF Level 5), with a 12-month top-up bachelor's degree afterwards.
If a public university or government job is your goal, types 1 and 2 will suit you better.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a software engineering diploma in Malaysia?
Polytechnics usually take about 2.5–3 years and MQA-registered private diplomas about 2–2.5 years. Nova Academy's takes 18 months (15 months of study plus a 3-month internship stage).
Can I study a software engineering diploma without SPM?
Polytechnics and MQA-registered diplomas usually need SPM. Age-based vocational diplomas don't; Nova Academy accepts students from 16.
What's the difference between a software engineering diploma and an IT diploma?
An IT diploma is broader (networks, systems, support); a software engineering diploma focuses on designing, building and testing software. For developer roles, software engineering is the closer fit.
