Can I Study a Degree Without SPM in Malaysia? 4 Routes Compared (2026)

By Dr. Kong, Director of Strategic Communications·

Yes. The most common route without SPM is a diploma that doesn't require SPM (from age 16) followed by a top-up degree. At Nova Academy that's an 18-month diploma plus a 12-month top-up — about 30 months to a bachelor's degree awarded by UITM Poland (EQF Level 6). Applicants aged 21+ with work experience can also use MQA's APEL.A.

Can I Study a Degree Without SPM in Malaysia? 4 Routes Compared (2026)

Yes. Not having SPM doesn't stop you from getting a degree — it just means you can't apply to a bachelor's programme from zero. You first need an alternative entry qualification, and the most common one is a diploma that doesn't require SPM, followed by a top-up degree. Here are the four routes with entry requirements, minimum age and time to degree.

4 Routes to a Degree Without SPM

Route 1: Diploma + Top-Up Degree (TVET route)

For students aged 16+ with no SPM or weak results who want practical skills quickly. Start a vocational diploma that doesn't require SPM, then continue to a top-up degree.

  • SPM needed: No
  • Minimum age: 16
  • Time to degree: At Nova Academy, an 18-month diploma (15 months of study + a 3-month internship) + a 12-month top-up degree — about 30 months
  • Fees: Diploma from RM19,500, top-up degree RM39,000–42,000, both payable in instalments

Route 2: Foundation or Certificate

For students who have SPM but not the results to enter a degree directly. Private college certificates usually need only a few SPM credits or passes, leading to a diploma and then a degree; foundation programmes generally need around 5 SPM credits.

  • SPM needed: Yes (lower requirements than a degree)
  • Minimum age: 17 (after SPM)
  • Time to degree: Certificate → Diploma → Degree about 5–6 years; Foundation → Degree about 4 years

Route 3: APEL.A (entry based on work experience)

For working adults without formal qualifications. APEL.A is run by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); pass the assessment and you can apply to a local university bachelor's programme.

  • SPM needed: No
  • Minimum age: 21, with relevant work experience
  • Time to degree: 3–4 years of study after passing the assessment

Route 4: SKM / DKM skills certificates

For students heading into technical trades (electrical, mechanical, automotive). SKM (Malaysian Skills Certificate) needs no SPM; after progressing to DKM / DLKM, some universities accept these for related bachelor's programmes.

  • SPM needed: No
  • Minimum age: 16
  • Time to degree: Depends on programme and level; usually longer

Which Route Fits You?

  • Aged 16–20, no SPM, interested in IT or design: Route 1 (diploma + top-up degree) is the fastest
  • Have SPM but weak results: Route 2 or Route 1, depending on whether you prefer academic or hands-on study
  • Aged 21+ with work experience: Route 3 (APEL.A), or Route 1 to build practical skills
  • Aiming for technical trades: Route 4 (SKM/DKM)

How Nova Academy's Diploma-to-Degree Route Works

  1. Enrol in a diploma from age 16 — Software Engineering, Cyber Security, Creative Multimedia or Technopreneurship. No SPM, no entrance exam.
  2. Complete the diploma in 18 months (15 months of study + a guaranteed 3-month internship) and earn an EQF Level 5 diploma.
  3. Continue to a 12-month top-up degree, with credit transfer for eligible students, and earn an EQF Level 6 bachelor's degree.

Nova Academy's diplomas and degrees are awarded by UITM Poland, accredited by the Polish education authorities, under the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). Note that they are not MQA-accredited local degrees — if you are aiming for a Malaysian government job, check MQA equivalency first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study a degree without SPM?

Yes, though usually not straight from zero. The most common route is a diploma that doesn't require SPM (from age 16) followed by a top-up degree; applicants aged 21+ with work experience can use MQA's APEL.A; technical trades can go through SKM/DKM skills certificates.

What is the fastest way to a degree without SPM?

At Nova Academy: an 18-month diploma (15 months of study + a 3-month internship) plus a 12-month top-up degree — about 30 months in total. The traditional SPM → Foundation → Degree route usually takes 4–5 years.

What is APEL.A and who can apply?

APEL.A (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) is an MQA-run entry route that lets adults without the usual qualifications apply to local university programmes based on work experience. For a bachelor's programme you generally need to be 21+, have relevant work experience and pass MQA's assessment (aptitude test and portfolio).

What is a top-up degree?

A top-up degree is a bachelor's programme for diploma holders that counts the credits you already earned, so you only need about 12 more months to graduate. Nova Academy's top-up degrees cost RM39,000–42,000, payable in instalments.

No. Nova Academy's diplomas and degrees are awarded by UITM Poland, accredited by the Polish education authorities, and mapped to EQF Level 5 (diploma) and Level 6 (degree) under the European Qualifications Framework. MQA only accredits locally awarded programmes; if you plan to apply for Malaysian government jobs, check the MQA equivalency requirements first.
